The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office has learned of a new phone scam that is occurring across the nation.
This scam consists of the victim receiving a phone call and the caller asking “can you hear me?” It has been reported that the suspect will record the victim when they say “yes”.
The suspect will then use the recording to attempt authorizing charges on a phone or utility account at the victim’s expense.
There has been one case locally where a citizen received a phone call, and it appeared the caller was using this tactic.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to warn citizen’s to not answer calls that they do not recognize. Also, it is never a good idea to confirm your telephone number or give personal information to callers.
