'Bohemian Rhapsody' Wins Twice at Golden Globes

Queen's Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody continues to exceed expectations, winning two Golden Globes Sunday night.

The film was named Best Motion Picture - Drama, while its star Rami Malek came away from the festivities with the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama.

The Golden Globes are thought to influence the Academy Awards, so the two big wins appear to buoy Bohemian Rhapsody's Oscar chances. The Academy is taking nominations for its awards until January 14. Nominations will be announced on Jan. 22, and the 91st annual Oscars presentation takes place on February 24.

In the past five years, the top acting awards at the Globes and the Oscars have matched three times. Gary Oldman won at both shows last year for his role in Darkest Hour. Leonardo DiCaprio won in 2016 at both shows for his performance in The Revenant. And Eddie Redmayne won both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award in 2015 for The Theory of Everything

Furthermore, Malek and the movie are up for even more recognition at the upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 27.

At the box office, Bohemian Rhapsody was a stone cold hit, where it became the highest-earning music biopic of all-time

Critics were less enthusiastic about the film, pointing out incongruities in its timeline and a perhaps overly glossy retelling of Queen's tumultuous legacy and shying away from tackling Mercury's tragic death.

Still, two Golden Globes is some sweet vindication for Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor, who fought through setbacks, script edits, falling stars and a fired director for some 12 years trying to get Bohemian Rhasody made.
